Keep in mind that your décor should serve you, not the other way around.  Your lifestyle must inform your design choices, so consider what makes your living space unique to you:

-Do you have pets?  You will not want to choose fabrics that might attract their attention and be damaged by fur, claws, or muddy feet.

-Conventional drapery cords and hardware can be a safety hazard for young children.  There are now child-safe alternatives from which to choose.

-Do you live in a humid or a very dry climate?  This should affect your choice of natural fibers or polyester or cotton/polyester blends.
